Endurance flight powered by the sun
Project overview
Projet Sola is an EPFL student project developing a 3-metre solar-powered unmanned aircraft, or solar UAV, designed to demonstrate long-endurance electric flight. Prototype IV targets at least 8 hours of flight using onboard photovoltaic energy, while keeping the aircraft light, stable and technically transparent.
Beyond the endurance challenge, the project is becoming a practical flying platform for experimentation. Our goal is to offer EPFL laboratories and startups a real airborne testbed for algorithms, embedded systems, energy-management strategies and sensing technologies that need to be validated outside the lab.

Sola development log
A technical timeline of Prototype IV: design choices, manufacturing steps, integration milestones, non-solar flight tests and the path toward solar validation.
Team
Prototype IV is built by a focused student team organised around aircraft systems: aerostructure, avionics, solar energy, ground communication and public documentation. Each role is tied to a concrete subsystem and flight-test requirement.
Meet the membersPartners
Prototype IV is supported by financial, technical and media partners who help turn a student-led aircraft into a credible experimental platform.
